Eugene "CelloMan" Friesen
I watched ur show on public access channel 87 when i heard u were coming to wilton. Unfortunately i didnt go to wilton public schools at the time, but hopefully i'll get to see u live someday. Instead i just had to grab a bucket of popcorn and watch you string away on my television. I loved ur ability to change the mood and emotion as well as the acts, including, my favorite, the squirrel mask. I have been passionately playing the cello since i was about 5, the first time i set eyes on one. However, i am not quite at the level i strive for, probably because of my studies (I'm a high honor roll kid!) but if i can continue to aspire, with a little help and guidance, someday i hope to perform similar performances, but in more of a "Cello Band"
just heard a bit of one of your trio globo discs. sounds very nice. Bravo Blair Lofgren-principal cello-orchestre symphonique de Quebec
Dear Eugene,Your web site is nice. I like what you are doing. I like to listen cello music (especially solo). Being a violin maker, I like creating cello most of all.Thank you and good luck - Ces Kul
hey celloman! whats up??!! i thought the squirrel mask was awesome! where did you buy it! come back to beechwood!
you are great I love the masks but the only bad part was the old man mask was corny
Dear Gene,it's been a long time, but I hope you remember me as a keyboardist friend of Paul Halley's. Last time we met was in the theatre in Norfolk after Celloman, when I was on my way to study organ in France. I'm back in the States now and would love to bring you to Montclair, New Jersey. I'm at the Church of the Immaculate Conception - fine organ, piano and acoustics. We'll talk! I would be interested in the details of your upcoming performance in Williamstown, MA (Rumi), especially for the date of Feb. 10.Will be in touch again with some booking ideas.Best wishes to you,Renee
I don't Know how to say in einglish that I feel in spanish but I Know that when the Trio Globo sound I Know cause I play cello (... or I try it!) THANKS for "Darknes" Thanks for "Rising" ... thanks for all CD, THANKS FOR YOUR MUSIC. I hope learn to play, I'm looking for a nice sound. Here is the way. Thanks!!!!!!
Aloha- I am networking, and I hope you or someone can help me. I am coming to Kauai Dec. 9, for 3 weeks (our 10th time on the island). I have been taking cello lessons for the past 2 years, and I would love to use this time to practice, but do not want to take my own cello from Chicago to Kauai. Any ideas where I could get one to use for those 3 weeks? I would gladly pay a reasonable amount. Mahalo!! E-mail me at: r-minkus@northwestern.edu
Hi Eugene!I first heard you through the steam heat pipes in an apartment in Delaware. I think you were with Delos then. You were practicing in the apartment next door and I found it difficult to concentrate on the meeting at hand. Thanks for that! Now our beards are white and we've little ones to put our arms around. I'm looking forward to seeing you in Ithaca in January. Hope to chat with you and Paul.Adios,Steve
You have a wonderful site!
Hi Eugene- Too bad I missed your performance this week here in So. CA! I see on your performance schedule that you'll be in Santa Fe in early Dec.: me too - I'll be playing with Santa Fe Pro Musica at the Lensic. Where are you performing? Would be great to hear you guys...I spoke with you YEARS ago re: getting the sheet music for "Remembering You" from your "Arms Around You"...since it wasn't in print, I did a take down and now have a viola version! It is such a lovely piece. Take care & hope to see you in NM! all the best: suzanna
Hi! I would like to thank you for your music. It inspires me as a cellist to get out of the box! I have attended the solstace concerts at St John's for the past several years & have purchased your CD's . I am a member of the Music for People organization and attend their workshops regularly. I love the improvisational aspect of music in my life. Do you have any workshops specifically for cellists? I would jump on the opportunity to learn from you. Amanda
Hi Eugene! Just checking out your website and looking forward to the concert at the Bonfy Ranch Sept 11. We hope to bring some friends to increase your fan club! Peace, Audrey
Hi, Eugene,I haven't heard you play for approximately 28? 29? years since you brightened the dreary halls of Fresno State and charmed all guests at the Upstart Crow bookstore/coffee house. Many things have improved in my life (hopefully, my viola playing) since those days. Hope to hear your music again one day!!
Eugene, we played together in a string quartet at Yale eons ago, and I loved your playing and your musicianship then, and now. I have your "Arms Around You" CD. Keep up the great work! Your independence has inspired me to do my own thing, too. I've made 6 CD's of basically cover tunes and I am currently writing original music and intend to record it. Seeing your CD at a "record" store years ago inspired me. I could never go back to orchestra playing now.
Gene!!!! I have SO often thought of finding you to see if there is a way I could learn from you in person!! Here I am at last! I would love to contribute your insights to my work with my quartet, Ethel! If you have a moment, please visit us at www.ethelcentral.com. There is real flow around what we are doing. Our commitment to contibuting to world harmony also seems synchronious with you and your work with Paul Winter. I'd love to see if there's a conversation there to be had? All Best - Hope you're having a great summer!! Dorothy.
really an excellent site - keep it going... greetz from vienna/austria and - stay creative !!
Hi Eugene, I'm here with mom (Gretchen Belknap) who is visiting Geoff, Sam and me in Sag Harbor. Thought it a good time to drop you a line. Hope all is well. I'm playing a lot of violin; ain't music grand.Cheers,Sara
Eugene, thank you so much for spending just that little amount of time working with me and the others in your master class at Camp Allegro, we all really appreciated it. The things you taught me, even in so little time have inspired me beyond what I could even imagine on my cello. My playing has improved tremedously, I cannot wait till I have the honor to meet with you again. Till then, play on and be brilliant!
Eugene,It was great to hear you at Prairie Pines in Wichita this evening and reaquaint as cousins. I read through your website and saw Conner's comments on how it would be "great to be your cousin"! It is an honor to be related to such a fine and creative musician. We really enjoyed the concert, the masks, the wonderful cello playing, and the outdoor setting. Maybe next time you're in town you'll have some time to stop by and visit a little more!God bless,Jenny
I heard and saw you at the Paul Winter concert in Brattleboro this year. You are fantastic. I'm looking forward to your concert at the Emanuel Church in Bellows Falls, Sat. June 5. Arthur Welwood, your colleague at Berklee is a very close friend of mine. Shirley
Aloha! The Song of Rivers album is my favorite music in the world! It really does it for me. I too am a musician from Fresno, though now I reside on Kauai. I'm really interested in finding more music with a similar sound to that of Song of Rivers. Any suggestions? Peace, Jerry
Our son is in the sixth grade and chose last fall to begin playing cello. I was a little concerned, since he is a small-scale person and a cello is really something to lug around, but he was insistent. We took him to your concert at the Lawrence Arts Center last fall. I'm ashamed to say I had never heard of you before, but we were all blown away by your performance. Love that squirrel mask! (You've got the body language down, that's for sure.) Anyway, we bought "In the Shade of Angels" and our son has played it almost every night. It surfaced outside his room today, so I swiped it and played "Dances of Rasputin" over and over on the way to work. Very very cool. You're an inspiration in many ways--thanks.
Eugene! It has been quite awhile. I thought I would write after learning that you were featured on one of the tracks of Dream Theater's latest CD, "Train of Thought." I hope all is going well for you. I have moved from Massachusetts to the Salt Lake City area, and STILL working with Yamaha!Take care!Phil CarnivaleYamaha Corporation of AmericaBand & Orchestral Division
I just wanted to thank you for taking time out of your schedule to conduct our District 2 orchestra this past weekend. It was a real honor to work with someone of your talent and get the chance to see you perform live. Hope to see you in Maine again soon and I love your new album!
First I must just say WOW! You are an awesome awesome cellist. You are one of the few true artists in the music world. Many of the "artists" in the music world today aren't really artist. They just do what everyone else is doing. Keep putting out the amazing albums!!
Your concert at the Arts Center in Lawrence, Kansas (with the Prairie Wind Dancers) was a total revelation for me. I'm still high from it. That concert, and talking to you afterwards, prompted me to do what I'd been wanting to do for about five years: buy a cello. You opened up a world of musical possibilities for me. So three months later, playing about 15 hours a week, I'm playing some (easy) classical stuff and lots of etudes with my teacher, fiddle tunes and Irish music with a guitar friend, and improvising with my kids, and I wonder why I ever waited so long. THANKS!!!
i am at a tech conference and look what i googled! hope you're well wendy, noel, mary, lilly and kate.
thank you so much for your wonderfully creative ideas, and your beautiful music. I haven't heard you in person but look forward to that experience!
We borrowed your video from the library and absolutely LOVED it!! PLEASE come to Minnesota!!!!!!!!!
Great performance on Dream Theaters new CD Train of Thought. Outstanding!
I really liked your show at Ruth Eckerd Hall. My whole class saw it. It was the best show there was. I think your electric cello was loud, but had a great sound. The whale song was one of my favorite parts. How much does a celloman weigh?
Celloman, you played at my school Boca Ciega today and I thought you were amazing. All my friends liked you as well. I didn't know it could be played so many different ways. You play a mean cello. Just thought you would like to know you had a few more fans.thanks for the visit come again soon.charles
I wanted to say thank you. You did a great job and you play great.I went today on the 22 of oct. I just wanted to know what your bow stings are made of? My sister palys the violin and she said that her bow strings were made of horse hair. Is that true? I know my mom went with us today. And she hade fun too. Thank you for the fun time!
You are amazing. I liked your show. I never knew someone could play an instrument so well. I saw you today (Oct. 22/03) at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater with my second grade class. My mom went too. She thought you were amazing also. Hope to see you again!
My second grade class attended your performance this morning (Oct 22) at Ruth Eckerd Hall. We really enjoyed your program! Thank you! :)My students will send you questions soon.
Hi CelloMan. Not too long ago you did an awesome concert at my school, Landrum Middle School in Palm Valley,FL. I just wanted to tell you before you preformed at our school i had no interest in insterements such as the cello. But you showed me how there are many different cool ways to play a cello. My dad is a piano teacher, so he's given me some piano lessons. I moved on to the guitar, and I love playing it for friends and family. Your concert inspired me very much that 'practice makes perfect'. Thanks CelloMan for coming to our school.
My favorites so far are Arms Around You and Night Glider. I used to board at Bernie Schulz's big house on Grafton Road in Townshend and he was a fan of yours. I wonder if you knew him? Looking forward to hearing the new CD.
I go to Landrum Middle in Ponte Vedra. I just wanted to say I loved your performance you did at my school. Thanks for being a musical role model kids like me can look up to. You rock! Go Cello Man!
The day you came to my school I was truly having a HORRIBLE day. At your program the first time your bow struck the cello I knew my day was on the turn around. Thank you so much for that experince!
Hi i am a student at Landrum I wanted to say that you are wonderful at what you do and I love your music
HEY! I just thought id stop by and say THANKS for the show it was awesome! I Go to Allan D. Nease High school for the blind.. jk heh but that was an awesome show.. bravo nicca!!
Eugene-Thank you for your teaching in lawrence last week. Being able to improvise with you was a blessing for me. To have that happen at this point in my learning on the cello was beyond my wildest dream. Your help with my technique has had wonderful results this week. I can't thank you enough. Karl
Another Thank You from the folks in Salina. I must tell you that you inspired my son to start practicing again. He is the young man that played with you on the String Bass at the jazz workshop. He is only 11 1/2 yrs. old, and has been playing the bass for two years. He gets really bored with the classical music they start out with in school. That night you taught him how to feel the music and go with it. The next day after school, he began practicing again. He will play his classroom music first and then he trys to make up his own jazz sound. Again, thank you for visiting with us and inspiring my son to play again.
I'm still in awe from watching you play last night at the Lawrence Arts Center. Thank you for coming and playing for us, it was magic.
Eugene, I LOVED your show at art alla cart in Salina. Thanks so much for coming, we need more musicians like you arround. Come and see us again soon as you can!
Hi Eugene! I'm having so much fun at String Fling. I'm sad that it's going to be over tomorrow. Great job at the recital! I'm eagerly waiting for the CD with Shadow Play. What an amazing piece. I love how you just bring out every type of sound from the cello such as using it as a percussion instrument or bowing behind the bridge. You're extremely talented. I can't wait for the CD!...Alright, I'll see you tomorrow!
Hi Eugene, Your website is wonderful. Don't know why I haven't thought to visit it sooner. Your music inspires my soul. Candi, Prairie Wind Dancers
Last year at the PrairieFest in Arkansas City Sherry and I were thrilled with your performance with the Paul Winter Consort and I am delighted to learn you'll be back this Friday & Saturday. We will try to be there (I just learned of the date on this visit to your site). Thank you for the beauty of your work. Galen

Hi Celloman, I attended your performance with my children yesterday at Ruth Eckert Hall and it was pure delight! You managed to keep dozens of children (and adults) in rapt attention the entire time, as well as offer a beautiful introduction to the cell. THANK YOU!!!
HELLO CELLO MAN!!! I was one of the students that attended your performance at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, Florida today (4/15/03) at the 10:30 show. I must say that I very much enjoyed the show!!!! You played very well!! And I loved the song you did with the whales in the background. Very Beautiful!! When I first came to the show, I didn't even know what a cello looked like!! But after your show, I'm starting to love the cello and want to hear more of it!! I'm very glad I went to your show. I wish I could have gone to the 7:00 show but I had a lot of homework to do!! Anyways, I loved the show!!

Dear Cello Man, You came to my school today, and I thought that you were great when you were that animal. Also, I thought the electric cello was cool. Also, you should come back to Wilton ometme and play for the others, cause I won't be coming back, because I'll be in 9th grade. Also, I'm not that big of a fan of string insturments, cause I play the drums, though now I am starting to like the cello Thanks for coming.
I just moved to New Jersey from Tokyo, Japan a few days ago. The purpose for the stay in the USA is to learn@more about jazz improvisation of cello. I would like to listen to your gigs and meet with you there. I think it would be nice if we could play together with only two cellos. Please listen to my cello as well. To know me, please enter into my homepage where it has an English page.
Loved your program for the students in San Bernardino on Friday (2/7/03)! Art Svenson says "Hi"
Very cool music!!!
When I first saw heard "New Friends" I was swept away by the awesome beauty of the music that you and Paul Halley make together. I've listened to it for the past 15 years and still have my breath taken away by the soulfulness of your improvisational melodies. I don't play an instrument (not well anyway) but come from a musical family and know when I hear heartful music, and your album truly stands out. It has helped sooth me to sleep on international flights, inspired me to reach into a peaceful place within, and to play joyously in life. Thank you for sharing your gifts with all of us.
I fell in love with the cello about 11 years ago. There is a song on one of the first 2 Winter Solstice collections by Windham Hill. It has a soulful strain of cello running through it that just about broke my heart. I wore out that little cassette tape. So the love affair and the search for more had begun. Several years later I bought the Yo Yo Ma double record of Bach interpretations, and although I enjoy them, I don't get the same vibrational experience. Last October I went to Paris. The high point of my trip was attending a cello concert one evening at Saint Chappelle. I was transfixed, but still yearned for more of the sound that I had remembered from long ago. I apologize for not citing the exact work or artist concerning all of the above references, but the real importance relates to now. I heard a song yesterday on a Hear Music CD at work. I stopped dead in my tracks. You are given credit, and the work, Always. Here was the cello I had hoped to discover again! I am anxious to aquire some recordings, and will be attending any future performances that come to the San Diego area. Even though I am 38 years old, I still want to learn how to play the cello when I grow up. Thank you.
DEAR GREAT PLYAYER, Ifm very sorry to send this ,message suddenly. Ifm a Japanese amateur classical composer and have kept my own site about these2years, in which I have introduced my original pieces. I made a suite for solo cello "THE SUITE for SOLO CELLO in F-MAJOR "a few years ago,and recently I have put it and other pieces. My many acquaintances have visited me and to my happiness those ones have been much liked! If you have time, please visit my site. I ell heartily welcome you. In addition, Ifd like you to give your comment tome by e-mail and the like... I must be so rude to do this suddenly, but I think I alsolove music deeply. So please forgive me. I'm looking forward to your visit. Thank you very much. MOROOKA HIROMICHI (This site is always checked by Norton AntiVirus.)
As I write to you, I am listening to "Light and Song" on "repeat." I put "A Winter's Solstice V" in with other Christmas music today and was totally captivated with your contribution to the CD. I am an adult student of cello (about 2 1/2 yrs along) and was wondering how I could purchase the cello music for that piece. I've searched under your name and Will Ackerman's also without success. Can you help? Sincerely, Jennifer Stafford 12118 SE Ss. Can you help? Sincerely, Jennifer Stafford 12118 SE Solstice Ct. Clackamas, OR 97015
sorry we didn't get to make your lodi concert. would love to get a copy of it, if you have it on c.d. Also would like to get a copy of your pizzicato etude, and your sounds of the whale cd. thanks jeff Thank-you again for spending your free time giving the master class, and the private lessons - both were a great learning experience for me. I'm already looking forward to your next visit (the sooner the better!) The Celloman concert was amazing, as were the pieces you did with the symphony. You are truly an inspiration!!!! Hope to hear from you soon, Tiffany
Killer concert in Lodi on Saturday. Thank you.
