Guest Conductor/Soloist
Eugene is available as guest conductor and/or soloist with string orchestra
or full orchestra.
Drawing on original compositions and arrangements, and new writing
from a wide variety of sources, Eugene's insight into playing jazz,
swing, and world music on stringed instruments reveal a new and
rhythmic facet of a string orchestra. In addition, Eugene's original
compositions for cello and strings - Humpback Harmony,
Mbira and Dances of Rasputin -
present an innovative use of the cello as a solo instrument in the
context of a string orchestra concert.
Program:
World on a String - features styles from around
the world in music which conveys the unique rhythmic, harmonic and
melodic personality of Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela, Armenia, Zimbabwe,
Russia, Inner Mongolia, Ireland, Japan and the United States.
Original works for cello and full orchestra:
Cellophant (@11 min.) - from Grasslandia, Cellophant
is a tribute to the African elephant.
Good Providence - (@9 min.) for cello, baritone
voice and orchestra - a tribute to Eugene's mother, Good Providence
begins with a dark Russian theme tortured by war, spills into a
joyous Irish wedding day and is unified by a Biblical text and prayer.
Recording features the Tulare County Symphony conducted by David
André, Milton Friesen baritone soloist, and Eugene on cello.
